From the sublime to the ridiculous. On the same day that the first trailer for James Franco’s adaptation of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying premieres, we also have the premiere of quite another type of confusing ‘is it good or the worst idea ever’ media: the first motion poster for Lionsgate’s I, Frankenstein.
I, Frankenstein stars Aaron Eckhart as Victor Frankenstein’s nefarious creation Adam (I’m pretty positive that that was not the Monster’s name, but nice adaptation), who is caught in the middle of the endless battle between demons and ‘vigilant’ gargoyles (beg pardon?), both of whom are seeking out the secret to his immortality.
My first reaction is ‘WTF?’, followed by ‘I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.’ But once I had recovered my English major equilibrium and come down from the angry dome, I discovered that I, Frankenstein is actually based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux, who also wrote the screenplay with director Stuart Beattie. When I subsequently learn that Grevioux also wrote Underworld, it all becomes much clearer. So that at least makes sense of the whole ‘gargoyles vs. demons’ thing, as well as the presence of Bill Nighy in I, Frankenstein.
The release date of I, Frankenstein has been moved around quite a bit recently. It was initially supposed to premiere in February 2013, then September and now has been pushed all the way to January 2014. That sort of moving around does not often bode well for a big production.
The motion poster, meanwhile, is kind of cool, but I do not much see the point. It’s basically a gif and, as any tumblr user will inform you, everyone can make a gif. Still, Eckhart looks badass and there are definitely gargoyles, as promised. Check it out below.
