Variety is reporting that Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is hopping on board Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak. Though the actor’s role is currently unknown, we do know that he’ll be joining Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnam in the Legendary Pictures movie. Plot details on this one are also pretty hard to come by but with a February 2014 start date penciled in, more information should be revealed in the near future.
From what del Toro has said about the film, we can confirm that it will be “a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story,” one that will allow the director to “play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules.” Sounds good to me. After all, this is Guillermo del Toro, there’s no reason to doubt that anything he does will be less than superb.
As for Cumberbatch, well, it seems that the actor’s star keeps getting pushed higher and higher. After really breaking out in BBC’s hit show Sherlock, the actor snagged roles in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy and will soon be seen as the villain in J.J Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness.
If that’s not enough, he also has 12 Years A Slave, Steve McQueen’s new film, coming up as well as the Julian Assange biopic, which is currently titled The Fifth Estate. Of course, he’s also still working on Sherlock, which is about to head into production for its third season. Clearly, he’s a busy man.
Again, no details on his role were revealed but given his current status in Hollywood, you can assume that it will be a decent sized one, likely a lead. When we know more we’ll be sure to update you.
For now though, tell us, are you excited to see Benedict Cumberbatch join Crimson Peak?
