Wally Pfister’s upcoming film Transcendence already has an intriguing premise – a scientist who has his brain uploaded to a computer – and an intriguing cast in Johnny Depp, Paul Bettany and Rebecca Hall. Now, we may add more to the list of intrigue as Kate Mara has joined the cast list as well.
There are only two significant female roles in Transcendence: Evelyn, the wife of Johnny Depp’s character Will, and Bree, a woman involved with a group of terrorists opposed to the artificial intelligence project. It’s likely that Hall is signed to play Evelyn, so that leaves Mara in the terrorist part, introduced in the script as ‘the tattooed baker.’ I do not know what that means, but I am interested to find out.
Despite that slightly odd character description, this should be a good part for Mara. She might be a slightly less well-known name than her sister Rooney, but has received great responses for her role in House of Cards. Putting her in the mix with the better known Hall, Depp and Bettany seems like a good idea.
Pfister’s Transcendence is rapidly becoming one of the most anticipated films of 2014. The basic plot sounds a bit like your usual sci-fi, human/machine hybrid tale – brain uploaded to a computer? What could possibly go wrong? But that does not make it any less intriguing. Pfister at least has some excellent cinematography credentials after his work with Christopher Nolan on films like Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, among others. And with a cast like this, I look forward to seeing what he will produce.
Shooting on Transcendence will begin in April 2013, with a slated release for April 25, 2014. With the lead cast firmly in place, all we have to do is sit back and wait.
