Kevin Smith Begins Scripting Clerks III

While we already knew Kevin Smith would be making Clerks III his final theatrical adventure, no one really knew when exactly we could expect Randal and Dante to be patronizing customers and blowing off work once again. Might the 20th anniversary of Clerks commencing filming be a good time for Kevin Smith to start formulating his last hurrah? Just like the perfect Hollywood script, of course!

Taking to social media this morning, the King of Nerds himself revealed a gift to the world which confirmed Clerks III is indeed on the way and we might be getting it sooner than expect. Well, that is if Kevin can come up with a story, because right now all we’ve got is a title – that we knew already. But hell, it’s something! What is the “it” though? Nothing but a simple screenshot of the cover of his screenplay document. It’s officially happening!

If you follow Kevin on Twitter, you would have seen this Tweet some five hours ago yourself:

Likewise, if you “Like” Kevin’s page on Facebook, you would have been treated to the same picture with the following caption:

THE BEGINNING OF THE END
20 years ago today, we started shooting CLERKS.
20 years later, with no plan or provocation, I jumped out of bed at 4:20 this morning and started writing CLERKS III.
It’s been like hanging out with old friends.
And after 2 hours of tapping the keys and giggling, I have come to a conclusion…
CLERKS III will be the best film I’ll ever make.

Wait, Clerks III is going to be better than Clerks? I really admire Smith’s enthusiasm here, and if he pulls such an accomplishment off more power to him, but I don’t want to set expectations sky high just yet. Clerks was special because it exemplified everything independent filmmaking was about, and f#cking crushed it. Now here we are, with a much more “mainstream” Kevin Smith, and I struggle to think we’ll get the same repeat experience – and this is coming from someone who actually liked Red State.

So let’s recap: Clerks III is happening, Smith woke up at 4:20 and started writing without a single idea, probably smoked up to get the creative juices flowing, and by now I can only imagine he has, say, a paragraph done? The one thing we do know is there are two very different reactions going around right now. Either you’re jumping for joy with the end of Smith’s career in sight, or you’re a devout superfan who’s sobbing violently at the beginning of the end.

Here’s the picture itself of the script!
