It seems that Bradley Cooper can do no wrong (yes, I even enjoyed The Words). His star is shining brighter than most in Hollywood these days and though he has a vast amount of high profile projects on his plate, you can now add one more: a Lance Armstrong Biopic which is being produced by J.J. Abrams. Of course, Abrams is pretty busy now that he has been confirmed to direct Star Wars: Episode VII, but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t spending time working on other projects.
The director has apparently been in talks with Cooper for the lead role in the Armstrong film, saying “[Cooper] sent me an email and we’ve been talking.” Now, that’s far, far from official and it could mean absolutely nothing, but it’s an intriguing prospect nonetheless. “Talking” can mean a lot of things but something tells us that Abrams is seriously eyeing Cooper for the role in the film, which is based on the yet-to-be-written book by Juliet Macur titled Cycle of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong.
Now, just to be clear, Abrams’ production company Bad Robot has secured the rights to the novel but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Abrams himself will be directing. In fact, with Star Trek and now Star Wars on his plate, it’s likely that he won’t step behind the camera for this one. That being said, even if he isn’t helming the film, you can be sure that he’ll still have a big hand in bringing it to the big screen.
As for Cooper, we’d have no problem seeing him in the role here. He’s turned himself into quite a desirable leading man, showing that he can pull off any number of roles, be it dramatic or comedic. His performance in 2012’s Silver Linings Playbook was one of the best of the year and if he hadn’t convinced audiences by then that he truly is an A-list star, then I think that his recent Oscar nomination speaks for itself.
