Wii U Won’t Have Capcom Back-Catalog

Nintendo's new console will have to make do without recent Capcom releases such as Resident Evil 6, Street Fighter X Tekken, and Okami HD. On the Capcom Unity blog, senior VP Christian Svensson stated: "With regard to the Wii U, in general we're looking forward, not back so late ports are generally not on the table."

Nintendo’s new console will have to make do without recent Capcom releases such as Resident Evil 6Street Fighter X Tekken, and Okami HD as on the Capcom Unity blog, senior VP Christian Svensson stated: “With regard to the Wii U, in general we’re looking forward, not back so late ports are generally not on the table.”

Capcom’s plans not to re-release their recent titles to Nintendo’s new console means Capcom is conspicuously absent from the Wii U‘s launch line-up. The only Capcom game announced for the console thus far is Monster Hunter 3DmC: Devil May Cry and Lost Planet 3, Capcom’s upcoming multi-platform titles, are not planned for the Wii U.

Owners of the new system will have to content themselves to titles from Ubisoft, Activision, and other publishers, not to mention first-party Nintendo games, which generally out-sell third-party games on Nintendo consoles. Of course, being robbed of quality titles such as Resident Evil 6  and Okami HD is not ideal for Wii U owners but for now, there’s not much that gamers can do.

While the Wii U has enjoyed robust sales since launch, it isn’t on par with the Wii’s release, and since a console’s title library plays such a crucial rule in that console’s future success, the absence of titles from a publisher as large as Capcom could mean lower sales in the long run, especially if Wii U buyers were hoping for a port of Capcom games released for other consoles. Since the larger effects of Capcom’s initial absence from the Wii’s launch window remains to be seen, we’ll just have to opt for the wait-and-see.
