When you hear the name Jason Statham, what conjures up in your mind? Most likely it’s an image of the actor grunting dialogue and kicking some butt while gunshots and explosions go off all around him. This is the typical movie that we’ve come to expect from him. So how does the new trailer for his latest film differentiate itself from his previous work? Well… it doesn’t.
Today, thanks to The Film Stage, we have the first trailer for Parker, Statham’s latest outing, and yes, it features all of the usual staples we’re used to seeing in all of his other films. This time, however, he’s brought along Jennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte and Michael Chiklis for the ride.
What’s even more interesting though is that the film is directed by Taylor Hackford, an Academy Award winner who has directed such other films as Ray, The Devil’s Advocate and An Officer and a Gentleman. My best guess as to why he took the job is that he thought he might be able to bring something new to the usual Statham shtick.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the film, which is based on Donald E. Westlake’s novels, here’s a brief synopsis:
Parker (Jason Statham) is a professional thief who lives by a personal code of ethics: Don’t steal from people who can’t afford it and don’t hurt people who don’t deserve it. But on his latest heist, his crew double crosses him, steals his stash, and leaves him for dead. Disguised as a rich Texan, Parker takes on an unlikely partner, Leslie (Jennifer Lopez) to devise a plan to hijack the score, take everyone down and get away clean.
As if we needed additional proof that the movie is probably not going to be particularly good, the studio has chosen to release it during one of two “dump months” of the year, which shows that they don’t have much confidence in it.
At the very least, hopefully Statham fans will get their fill when Parker hits theaters on January 25th, 2013.
