Executive producers often receive too much credit for the films they work on, but that is rarely the case with Guillermo del Toro, whose hand is evident in every film he has a part in.
Anyone who has seen The Orphanage can attest to this, and it appears that del Toro might have done it again with Mama, which looks to be absolutely dripping with the inventive visuals he’s known for as seen in the trailer, which was released a few days ago.
Mama stars Jessica Chastain, barely recognizable with her hair short and jet black, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who viewers might recognize from his role as Ser Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones.
They play Annabel and Lucas, tasked with raising Lucas’ nieces who were found in the forest after going missing there five years prior. As they quickly realize though, that’s a taller task than they ever could have imagined.
Due out on January 18th of next year, Mama would appear to be a bounce-back film after last year’s del Toro-produced Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, which was met with mixed reviews. Hopefully Mama takes a different direction than the aforementioned project and gives us a film that is worthy of carrying Guillermo del Toro‘s name.
