Savages Coming To Blu-Ray In October

Director Oliver Stone has had mostly what one would like to describe as a hit-or-miss career. For every Natural Born Killers or Wall Street he makes World Trade Center or Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. The guy clearly doesn't know how to keep a consistent flow of quality films, but he gets credit for continuing to try new things with his newer films.

Universal Studios have announced Oliver Stone’s latest ultra-violent crime drama Savages for Blu-Ray, starring Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, Benicio Del Toro and John Travolta.

Director Oliver Stone has had a hit-or-miss career. For every Natural Born Killers or Wall Street, he also makes World Trade Center or Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

Savages is his attempt to rekindle the flames from his Natural Born Killer days and in his attempt he has managed to come off as a cheap Tony Scott knockoff. There’s lots of grisly violence and quick jump-cuts, but no reason for doing so. His take on the drug war isn’t a horrible one, but far from being cinematic greatness that we used to expect from a filmmaker of Stone’s caliber.

Our very own Kristal Cooper summed it up well in her review of the film:

A preposterously overblown take on the drug trade, Savages is occasionally fun but mostly just plain dumb.

Universal is bringing the film to Blu-Ray in a Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack that promises an all-new unrated edition that was too violent for theaters. In addition to that cut the film will come with the following bonus material:

  • Feature Commentary with director Oliver Stone
  • Feature Commentary with producers Moritz Borman, Eric Kopeloff, Co-Screenwriter/Novelist Don Winslow, Executive Producer/Co-Screenwriter Shane Salerno and Production Designer Tomás Voth
  • Stone Cold Savages – A five-part profile of the film showcases the entire cast and crew as Oliver Stone pushes his loyal and talented company far past their limits in order to bring this story to life. From concept to completion, viewers get unprecedented access to a master storyteller’s creative process.
