Thor: The Dark World Gets Another Villain In Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

It seems that Thor is going to have a lot more to deal with than just his meddlesome brother and some pesky frost giants for the upcoming Thor: The Dark World, with news coming from Variety that Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje has joined the cast, playing the dual roles of Algrim the Strong and Kurse.

For those not up on their Norse Mythology (by way of Marvel of course), Algrim the Strong is described as one of the toughest of the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, coerced by the villainous Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) to do battle with Thor. But when Algrim is betrayed by Malekith and injured in battle, he is healed and transformed into Kurse, a being far more powerful and twice as strong as our mighty hammer wielding hero.

I don’t know about you, but this bit of casting news has me even more excited for Thor’s return. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje has proved himself time and time again as an incredibly imposing presence, (his Mr. Eko being one of the best things about Lost). He will no doubt be more than a match for Hemsworth’s Thor.

My only worry at the moment is that we could have another issue of too-many-villains-itis, a problem that has plagued and been the downfall of many a superhero films in the past. Spider-Man 3 anybody?

Hopefully, new director Alan Taylor can wrangle all the elements together to make this sequel as worthy as I’m hoping it will be.

Thor: The Dark World is currently filming in London with release due late next year.
