Neil Jordan’s upcoming Byzantium will be keeping bloodsucking in the family, as seen by newly released pictures from the vampire flick. Starring Gemma Arterton, Sam Riley and Saoirse Ronan, the official synopsis paints a gory picture of a mother-daughter vampiric duo running from their pasts and hiding out at a run-down coastal resort. Where they go, terrifying secrets, bared fangs and deathly havoc follow.
The film is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from September 6th to 16th. The TIFF website reports that a schedule will be released on August 21st, so we’ll keep you updated on this supernatural drama’s exact premiere date.
The new images showcase relatively few notable moments, except for a blood-splattered Saorise Ronan and another with a dark insect sitting on the sleeping actress’ forehead. Nothing to scream home to mother about, but definitely creepy enough to pique any horror fan’s curiosity.
For the bloodsucking aficionados, knowing that Byzantium is directed by the critically acclaimed writer and filmmaker Neil Jordan is probably a bigger draw. Renowned for directing the horror classic Interview with the Vampire, Jordan’s works usually promise heartfelt themes woven into narratives rich with compelling characters that captivate viewers. He’s found success in taking unusual traits or sexuality in directions Hollywood isn’t commonly known to be keen on. Although the idea of an eternally young pair of female vampires sounds gimmicky, Jordan will hopefully show them in an insightful manner.
Personally, I think Jordan’s works are worth watching and I will be keeping my eye on Byzantium.
Is Jordan’s latest movie worth putting a stake in? Or does Byzantium sound like yet another cliché vampire tale? Check out the images and tell us what you think in the comments below.
