I usually try to (somewhat) maintain an air of professionalism when reporting news, so simply imagine me swearing my mouth off while reading this next sentence. According to anonymous sources, Final Fantasy Versus XIII may have been officially cancelled.
Several sites are receiving reports from “inside sources” that the game was actually canned a few weeks ago. The silence comes from Square Enix hoping the game can simply fade away, rather than impact their stock prices by formally announcing the game’s cancellation.
Versus XIII, which was announced six years ago, had only finally just reached “full development mode” last September. Since then, snippets of the game have appeared in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy.
If you have any hope whatsoever, Square also announced they’d be having some sort of big announcement at a Final Fantasy event on September 1. The word on the street is that this event will be used to announce Final Fantasy XIII-3, which would certainly make sense given the ending of the previous game.
My heart is broken, folks. I was sorely looking forward to Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Of course there’s still the rumor that it’ll just be renamed as Final Fantasy XV, but I’m not holding my breath for that either.
On the plus side, that means they should be working on Kingdom Hearts 3 now, right?
