‘Secret Invasion’ footage promises a surprise major villain is about to rise up

Gravik may be the biggest thorn in Fury's side, but the competition is quite fierce.

We’re days away from entering the final stretch of Secret Invasion, with the miniseries’ penultimate episode set to drop this Wednesday. It’s been an intense, brutal, and somewhat disjointed ride for Nick Fury and company, and judging by the nuances that have cropped up in just four episodes, we can only imagine what the final third of the show has in store for us.

With this latest teaser from Marvel Studios, however, one thing has been made even more abundantly clear than it already was; Rhodey — rather, the Skrull impersonating him — is only going to become a bigger thorn in Fury’s side as time goes on.

We’ve speculated on the mystery behind faux-Rhodey from countless angles, from a twist that’s faithful to the comics, to some still-chugging legacy theories, to clues in the credits. The truth, of course, won’t be apparent until after Secret Invasion has run its course, and even then, some plot points just might be saved for future projects; let’s not forget that the Rhodey-centric Armor Wars is still cooking, after all.

Whatever ends up happening, it looks like the remainder of Secret Invasion will see faux-Rhodey turn up the aggression against Fury; a favor that the former S.H.I.E.L.D. commander seems all too happy to return. Indeed, the truth of Fury being in survival mode looks to be a card he can no longer keep to his chest, and with faux-Rhodey ready to exploit that at the drop of a hat, it’s hard to imagine how our protagonist is going to come out the other side of this debacle in one piece.

Secret Invasion is streaming on Disney Plus. New episodes will release every Wednesday until the season finale on July 26.
