So far, there have been multiple comparisons to Tim Burton‘s Alice in Wonderland, but there’s a very simple explanation for that. Robert Stromberg, production designer for Oz, also worked on Alice, as well as James Cameron‘s Avatar. Stromberg is also currently directing Disney’s Maleficent, and while he’s not acting as production designer on it, you can probably still expect it to have a similar look.

I’m still fascinated to see what Raimi has up his sleeve for this film. It’s just hard to imagine him doing something like this as whenever I hear his name, like most people, my thoughts immediately turn to his Evil Dead trilogy (others may think of his Spider-Man trilogy), so it will be quite interesting to see what he’s able to do with something this far out of his normal element.

In case you’re not familiar with Oz: The Great and Powerful, here’s a synopsis of the film:

Oz The Great and Powerful imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

The film hits theaters on March 8, 2013.
