The days when fans would toss soft items on stage, like underwear, that were enjoyed by their favorite performers are long gone. In recent years, concertgoers have developed a disturbing trend of hurling hard objects like iPhones instead, causing anguish and injury to the stars performing for reasons that defy common sense.
Billie Eilish addressed this issue in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday at the red carpet of Barbie‘s international premiere in Los Angeles, weighing in with her own two cents:
“I’ve been getting hit on stage with things for like literally six years, I don’t know why this is like new. People just get excited and it can be dangerous.”
The “Bad Guy” singer said she recognizes that the fans do this out of love, but she still has conflicting feelings about it.
“I have mixed feelings about it, because when you’re up there it blows. But you know it’s out of love and they’re just trying to give you something. You’re in a vulnerable position, but I’ve been getting hit with stuff for like years.”
Eilish’s brother Finneas then sent a direct message to fans through The Hollywood Reporter‘s camera:
“Don’t do it — we get it but don’t do it.”
Eilish and Finneas went to the premiere to promote their new song, “What Was I Made For?,” which is on the Barbie soundtrack. And they said that viewing a sneak peek of the film early inspired the song.
Not only has Eilish had to deal with this obviously harmful situation on stage, but so have a group of other singers, including Pink, Kelsea Ballerini, Harry Styles, Ava Max, Drake, Lil Nas X, and Ava Max. Pop star Bebe Rexha was hit in the head by a phone thrown by an audience member at one of her concerts just last month.
