If you’re not quite emotionally prepared for Henry Cavill hanging up his silver wig by the time The Witcher season 3 comes to a close, you’re most certainly not alone. Just as Doug Cockle embodied the gruff monster slayer Geralt of Rivia in CD Projekt Red’s video games, Cavill did the character justice in Netflix’s live-action series.
As such, the social media furor about having Liam Hemsworth taking up the task of stepping into Geralt’s boots is somewhat understandable. For those of us who have come to terms with the fact since the shocking announcement last year, it’s still at the very least going to be a little weird. A sentiment that is also shared by none other than one of Cavill’s co-stars, Anya Chalotra – who breathes life into Yennefer.
The actress recently had her brain picked by ComicBook about how she feels about Hemsworth stepping into the role for season 4. While she expressed some optimism about the shakeup, she very much acknowledged that it’s going to be bizarre to have a new Geralt playing opposite her.
“Excited. Yeah, can’t wait to have Liam on board. Well, he is, but to meet him and have him as Geralt. It’s going to be bizarre, and I feel like I’m definitely going to feel that loss. I think we all will. Henry’s been incredible and carried the show, so definitely going to feel that, but very, very excited for what’s to come. There’s so much story to tell.”
Chalotra has unsurprisingly remained ever-diplomatic in the face of the controversial change, but not too long ago she expressed curiosity about how the change will play out on screen, while The Witcher’s showrunners insist that the transition will be handled in a “flawless” and “lore accurate” way.
For the time being, we can go ahead and enjoy Cavill’s final few hours as Geralt, with volume 1 of The Witcher’s third season now streaming on Netflix.
