When spine-tingling supernatural project The Boogeyman was first announced to be in the works, die-hard horror fanatics immediately scoffed after discovering that Rob Savage’s latest venture would be released for straight-to-streaming purposes. However, when author Stephen King, the original writer of the film’s story, decided to step in and offer some advice, the horror flick was eventually changed to a theatrical release — a decision that proved to be instrumental in the project’s success.
As per Bloody Disgusting, the horror movie has already turned out to be extremely profitable in its early days, with The Boogeyman securing $20 million at the worldwide box office. With a budget of $35 million, it’s surely going to take some time before the film is considered to be a strong box office achiever. Then again, making over half that in the first weekend is definitely a pleasant place to begin.
With $12.3 million being secured in theaters across the United States this weekend, it’s clear that the bone-chilling horror extravaganza turned out to be a massive hit in the international market. And with an ambiguous ending that will chill you to the bone, one can only wonder if a potential sequel will scare up audiences just as badly.
Of course, when you capitalize on a short story from Stephen King, then it’s almost a guarantee that the project will pull in the big bucks. As previously mentioned, the film still has a ways to go before touching the profitable $100 million mark, but early box-office showings have kicked off to a great start — a feat that is especially impressive since the movie was set to initially land on Hulu.
The Boogeyman is out in theaters now.
