Fast X did more than break records in the US market, it also dominated the international scene, specifically in China. As a matter of fact, its box office haul in the country was edging close to double what Marvel’s latest blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, did on its maiden weekend.
Variety reported that the 10th installment of Fast & Furious dominated the Chinese box office during the film’s opening weekend. The film managed to earn around $51.1 million, which helped placed itself at the top of China’s box office performers. It was also reported that the film opened early on Wednesday and over the first five days of its theatrical run, it ran away with around $77.4 million.
It was revealed that Fast X currently holds 58 percent of the box office market share. Asides from that, Fast X managed to achieve the biggest Box Office opening outside of the holiday season and was reportedly close to matching Avatar 2: The Way of Water‘s box office performance back in Dec. 2022.
In comparison, when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released in the country, the superhero blockbuster managed to earn around $28 million during its opening weekend alone. And it was reported that these numbers continued to drop throughout the following weeks since its release.
While Fast X‘s achievements were pretty impressive, it does not compete with the rest of The Fast & Furious saga that has released throughout the years. F9: The Fast Saga earned $139 million back in 2021. Meanwhile, The Fate of the Furious earned $184 million in 2017. But when compared to the franchise’s earlier titles, Fast X has earned more compared to the overall gross income those films generated in its original run, according to Box Office Mojo.
Fast X is the first part of the epic finale of the Fast & Furious saga, with part two confirmed to be released sometime around 2025. If you want to see the beginning of the end of the Toretto family’s tale, Fast X is now showing in theaters.
