Acting legend Sir Anthony Hopkins called Ryan Reynolds an “honorary Welsh boyo,” according to the BBC, after Wrexham AFC’s return to the Football League. And now, Morfydd Clark, best known as Galadriel in the Amazon Prime fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, is onboard singing praises of the actor and businessman.
In an interview with Collider, Clark explained how she feels connected to Reynolds’ recent success story with the soccer team. The Welsh actress said:
Oh, I’m so into that. It’s been so exciting for us. My mom actually grew up near Wrexham and I spent time as a child in Wrexham Farmers Market, and I just can’t believe it’s happened, still. And yeah, it’s also led to the– I think Ryan Reynolds’ film was one of the first, the first film on Netflix to have Welsh subtitles. Just like an incredible thing to happen to quite a small, slightly ignored place. And also Wrexham fans are amazing. Yeah, and I know people there because of where my mom’s from, and it’s just been amazing for the community. They’ve created jobs and they’ve also been very generous with how they’ve trained people up through that documentary, so, yeah, it’s fantastic.
Welcome to Wrexham is a documentary about the efforts of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to revive the third-oldest professional association football team in the world, founded in 1864. They are inexperienced as sports team managers, however, the series emphasizes the pair’s hopes for the team and the community of Wrexham.
Since Morfydd Clark’s mother is from North Wales, it’s not hard to see why the actress—who was born in Sweden but moved to Penarth, Wales, when she was just two years old—is so enthusiastic about the Reynolds’ achievements both on the field and in the community.
Clark, who can converse fluently in both English and Welsh, won a BAFTA Cymru and earned a BAFTA Rising Star Award nomination for her portrayal in Saint Maud (2019). She stars in the first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, now streaming on Prime Video, in which she portrays a younger version of the elven heroine who fights evil. Given her ties to Wrexham, we might even spot her at one of the upcoming Wrexham AFC games.
