The Jedi in the Star Wars films are depicted as being near mythic at times, and it feels as if we cannot always know all there is to know about them. With each new film, a new ability is brought to the surface, but now fans are wondering what happened to one specific power that was displayed and seemingly never seen again.
George Lucas’ Jedi are individuals that can feel and use the Force and choose to use that ability to bring about order and justice to the universe. Though only introduced to us in the original trilogy through a handful of characters, it wasn’t until the prequels that we saw the Jedi Order in full force, and here we saw a grander display of their power (even if people didn’t really appreciate these films as much).
With an improvement in CGI and stunts in filmmaking came an expansion of what the Jedi could actually do on screen, and so out came the fancy gymnastic moves and crazy Force battle scenes. One such power that seemed to appear out of nowhere was Force Speed, where Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn found themselves in a standoff before they literally fled the scene at top speed. It isn’t a move that we see pulled off very often in the live-action films, in fact, some viewers wonder if we ever see it again, asking where it came from and where it went after this one scene.
One such fan posted a clip of the power in use on Reddit and commented that it is interesting that this appears to be the only time we see it used.
Now, the Star Wars universe isn’t limited to just the live-action movies of course. There are animations, the Disney Plus series, and even comics that go into more detail about the Jedi. Though this user thinks the OP is correct in that we only see it happen in the live-action in the above scene.
Another postulates that we may have seen a version of it in the original trilogy, though it doesn’t come across the same.
Some gave the reasoning that the CGI at this time didn’t make it look very convincing and so it was dropped.
Another goes as far as to say it may have even been an editing mistake.
The power does poke some holes in other moments within the film where it could have come in very handy.
Some posit that it is used in the movies by none other than Yoda himself, how else could he flip himself all over the place like a bouncy ball when the rest of the time he walks at a snails pace with a cane.
The power is found in other parts of the universe, even if it did disappear from the big screen.
With more Star Wars content on the way we may see this power return to us once more, though who knows if they just decided to drop it all together after it had a less-than-enthusiastic response the first time around.
