The Mandalorian‘s third season is now complete. While the latest episodes have divided fans as to their quality, the finale at least tied up a whole bunch of loose ends and left Din and Grogu in a good place. Most heartwarmingly of all, the closing moments saw Din adopt Grogu as his son, with his name now officially “Din Grogu.”
Throughout the season, we got a whole bunch of adorable Grogu moments, with the highlight the little guy receiving an IG-11 mech suit and hammering the “Yes” button to annoy his dad. From the first season onward, there’s been an admirable attempt not to use too much CGI for the pint-size Force user. This may have been fueled by season 1 star (and legendary director) Werner Herzog’s reaction to finding out they were once planning to replace the puppet with CGI, telling the crew “You are cowards. Leave it“.
It’s one thing for Grogu to be a puppet when he’s been carried around, but quite another for action sequences. While we don’t know for sure what’s practical and what’s not, his adorable leaps do indeed look like someone just tossing him into the air and hoping for the best. Yes, it looks silly, but we admire the commitment:
Gotta stay faithful to the old ways:
Don’t fumble the ball Carl!
There are some naysayers, but nuts to them!
We also like the intentionally jerky CGI look:
Lizzo with the intercept!
Puppet for life!
C’mon people, this is adorable:
If The Mandalorian team ever decided to use more CGI with Grogu than they already do, we’d be most displeased, so fingers crossed the muppet Grogu never departs Star Wars.
