The sci-fi world is rumbling under more than a dozen Star Wars news stories that highlight the space saga’s uncertain future, and though some of them might get your geek blood pumping due to years of silence on the cinematic front, it’s becoming increasingly evident that Lucasfilm doesn’t understand what the fandom wants out of the galaxy far, far away experience.
Meanwhile, Ewan McGregor — one of the few discernibly positive forces behind the franchise at the moment — has just teased Obi-Wan Kenobi’s future, hinting that the character isn’t necessarily done after his “rematch” with Darth Vader in the Disney Plus miniseries. Check out all of these beats and more below.
Lucasfilm genuinely seems to think Star Wars stans are interested in a Rey sequel, so who’s going to tell them?
During this year’s Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced a sequel set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker and featuring Rey as the last living Jedi. In it, the heroine will set about creating a new Jedi Order, just like Luke did many years ago, though what new threat the story will involve on the dark side front is anyone’s guess at this point.
Now, in a moment that befuddles even the most ardent sequel trilogy defenders, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has indicated that there’s a lot of interest among fans about what happened after The Rise of Skywalker. To that, we can only say this: Either the studio is just trolling us at this point, or they really have no idea what the community thinks of the sequels and their characters.
Ewan McGregor teases Obi-Wan Kenobi’s future on Disney Plus and beyond
Obi-Wan Kenobi was a mixture of epic and underwhelming moments, but if we put aside some of its most obvious faults, the show made good on its promise of capturing that hyped-up confrontation between the titular Jedi Master and his former padawan in a satisfying way. Leia was also a great addition to the dynamic, and there’s no denying the significant influence she had on Kenobi’s growth by the end.
Obi-Wan is now on a new journey of self-discovery with the help of his former master, and Ewan McGregor seems to agree there are a lot of themes to be explored in this story yet. Appearing at the Celebration convention, he said, “Maybe the audience will want more to come.” So, it’s all in your hands now, even if Kathleen Kennedy has already assured us that Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 is not in “active” development.
Dave Filoni says his concluding MandoVerse film shouldn’t be compared to Avengers: Endgame
The Mandalorian and all the other spinoff shows comprising the MandoVerse will soon reach that finish line through Dave Filoni’s cinematic outing. The Star Wars creative is hard at work bringing together the entire force of the MandoVerse to bear on the big screens, so more than anything, this movie will be a “crossover” event.
That said, Filoni refuses to let you compare it to something like Avengers: Endgame, maintaining that he and Jon Favreau are doing things “our own way.”
