James Gunn seems quite accustomed to being misquoted, misinterpreted, and taken out of context nowadays, as the director seems to be constantly putting out small fires. This time, it’s to do with Rocket’s position as the Guardians of the Galaxy‘s secret protagonist.
Gunn revealed recently that the reason he came back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was to finish Rocket Raccoon’s story arc. The new DC head revealed that he felt like Rocket’s story needed to be told, and that he thought of the character as the secret protagonist of the three films.
It makes sense as Rocket looks like he’ll be given a pretty great story arc, more so than Peter Quill. However, Gunn’s quote has already been misinterpreted by some on the internet who somehow got the wrong end of the stick.
Gunn felt the need to correct the error and even mentioned in the replies that it was an honest mistake so he’s not harboring any ill will towards the publication about his quote being misconstrued. Gunn has a habit of shutting down fake news regarding him or his movies, so it’s no surprise he felt the need to step in and make the correction, he’s also not afraid to shut down fans who have attacked him for his decision to reboot the DCU.
Meanwhile, fans shared their love for Rocket in the replies. Rocket has always been a fave of many and so it was great to hear that he is Gunn’s favorite character too.
Rocket is my favorite MCU character. The journey following his story has been my greatest joy of watching these films. The final shot of Vol. 2 always makes me cry. For me, he’s always been the protagonist. I can’t wait for Vol. 3. pic.twitter.com/567SxPaqzb

The final film looks set to be an emotional rollercoaster and potentially one of the greatest chapters in the MCU. It looks like we’ll be saying goodbye to a lot of characters one way or another, but here’s hoping Gunn spares his and everybody’s favorite raccoon and gives the pint-sized crew member the happy ending he deserves.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 releases in theaters on May 5.
