We may not have seen the end for this master assassin yet if the box office has anything to say about it. John Wick: Chapter 4 has been a massive hit so far, raking in an eye-watering amount of money in its opening weekend and leaving audiences very happy. Given all this, it may be that a fifth film is on the horizon despite Chapter 4 having been widely believed to be the final chapter in this franchise.
John Wick: Chapter 4 sees the return of Keanu Reeves as the titular character going on a whirlwind world tour in order to gain fight his way to freedom once more. The film’s opening raked in $73.8 million domestically garnering immaculate reviews and an A CinemaScore from audiences over on Rotten Tomatoes, becoming the highest-reviewed film of the franchise so far.
A and A+ scores are not that easy to get, and usually go to films that reach a very broad audience such as Top Gun: Maverick and Marvel films (though perhaps not the recent ones). The results from abroad were just as good, with the film debuting to a pretty decent $67.6 million over 71 countries, bringing its total global box office to sit at $141.4 million so far, another record for the franchise.
This has led Lionsgate motion picture group chair Joe Drake to put forward that a fifth film is not off the table according to The Hollywood Reporter. This could be interesting and a little difficult given how Chapter 4 ends, but Drake seems to believe that something can be worked out, despite director Chad Stahelski having stated that he and Reeves believed this was the end of the road for the character. However, with just how lucrative this last film been Drake has stated,
“There’s a will and there’s an openness. And you could certainly interpret that ending in different ways. We’re all going to take a tiny rest here and then scratch at ideas about whether there’s a credible way to get into five. But there’s no guarantee.”
He is aware though that those involved have a certain protectiveness over the characters and the story adding,
“Keanu and Chad, rightly so, are very protective about never screwing with the audience. So we certainly have our work cut out for us … Keanu is so beloved and that character is so beloved; that’s not lost on him.”
Regardless of whether not this fifth film will become a reality, we will see more of Reeves in the role as he is set to star as Wick in the upcoming spin-off Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas as yet another master assassin coming to theatres next year.
