Millions of gamers will have spent the weekend happily blasting through Las Plagas-infected rural Spain in the Resident Evil 4 Remake. The 2005 GameCube original is widely considered one of the finest and most influential games of all-time, so recreating it for modern audiences was a serious challenge for Capcom.
Judging by the universally glowing reviews and warm response on social media, it’s safe to say it hit a bullseye. Everything that made the original so special is polished to a mirror sheen, and there’s a bunch of new stuff that fits in perfectly. But for a few players, there’s a big fly in the ointment.
Your in-game mission is to rescue the President’s daughter, Ashley Graham. Once done, you have to escort her through a monster-infested village and castle to safety. So far, so familiar to players of the original. However, Capcom has made some changes to the character that have put a bee in some players’ bonnets and… well, check out this nightmare-inducing Steam review:
Oh man, we’re torn between abject disgust and a weird sympathy for a person so broken they’re this upset about not being able to see the panties of a video game character. The internet is right there, people, and there are literally millions of consenting real-life women happy to show off their panties to you in ultra-sharp 4K. Hell, if you want an interactive experience you don’t have to delve too far into the Steam store to find every conceivable form of female underwear video game right there to buy and.. uh, enjoy.
It’s worth remembering that similar anger was raised by the VR port of Resident Evil 4 on Oculus Quest in 2021, which stripped out some dialogue that hadn’t aged well, and also prevented you from peeking up your companion’s skirt.
If a couple of brief shots of Ashley’s underwear being trimmed out is a deal-breaker for you, then maybe go outside and touch some grass. While you’re at it, pick up a shovel, dig a hole in the grass, climb in, and scoop that soil back onto yourself.
