When James Gunn was named with Peter Safran as the new co-heads of DC Studios, there were more than a few sighs of relief.Aafter all, when it comes to comic book movies, few people have as clean a record as the mastermind behind the likes of the Guardians of the Galaxy series and The Suicide Squad.
Hype only skyrocketed when the duo made that first DCU slate announcement, which will kick off with Superman: Legacy two years from now. Even still, Gunn hasn’t been without his doubters. The SnyderVerse acolytes are still as bloodthirsty as ever, and the Henry Cavill diehards look like they’ll never forgive him at this point.
Luckily, while his opponents are vocal, Gunn’s supporters are happy to match such a volume, and one such supporter is comic book film regular David Dastmalchian, who heaped plenty of praise on the DC gaffer in an interview with ComicBook.
“When I read all of the stuff that he was doing, I couldn’t sit still. I was looking at my phone because the article came up when he announced everything, I was pacing around the house like everybody else out there who’s a nerd like us, just like going ‘Holy shit, awesome. Oh my God, look at that,’ There’s no better person to be steering the ship.”
Dastmalchian, of course, is fairly familiar with Gunn’s creative process, having made a turn in The Suicide Squad as the morbid, deadly Polka-Dot Man. He’s also not unfamiliar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having portrayed Kurt, a thief and ally of Scott Lang in Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp, before jumping roles to the adorable, Kirby-like Veb in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Considering the actor started his film career with a role in The Dark Knight, it’s safe to say he’s been around the block.
Polka-Dot Man may have met his demise in The Suicide Squad, but with Gunn’s soft reboot, there could very well be room for Dastmalchian in Gunn’s plans going forward; we’re sure the actor would be on board, in any case.
