‘Evil Dead Rise’ director teases ‘a punk rock opera dripping in blood’

A blood sacrifice might be what this upcoming entry needs to change the entire franchise.

Evil Dead is as Evil Dead does, and in the case of the upcoming fifth franchise installment Evil Dead Rise— heads are certainly set to roll. Directed by Irish horror guru Lee Cronin (Minutes Past Midnight, The Hole in the Ground), we’re sure this new take on Sam Raimi’s mythos won’t disappoint. Check out the blood curdling trailer below, and be warned, this puppy is Red-Band.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cronin talks at length about the terrifying task of bringing another Evil Dead to life, and the type of tone he wanted to convey.

“The blood is going to be a character in this movie, and I want it to be able to behave and flow the way I want it to move. I want it to rise a certain way; I want it to have a certain viscosity. That s*** was sticky-icky; if it got on your skin, you lost your hair. People were having to get hosed down every single day. I wanted to have the movie almost feel like a punk rock opera dripping in blood. That was what was in my mind a little bit, that it had a bit of attitude.”

You had us at punk rock opera. Seriously, this fresh spin on horror could be what the genre so desperately needs in 2023. It looks to break new ground for the series, and we can’t wait for the carnage it will take to pull that off. Set to hit theaters on April 21, we only have one thing left to say — groovy.
