The Dark Knight flies again. Same great news on the animated Batman front today as the cancelled animated HBO Max series Batman: Caped Crusader will get to spread its wings on Amazon.
Amazon ordered two seasons of the show, which reimagines the world’s greatest detective in a new way, according to producers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, via Variety. It was originally ordered by HBO Max in 2021, but was scrapped after the big merger that created entertainment behemoth Warner Bros. Discovery.
A few other shows got the unfortunate axe as well, including a Steve Urkel based show called Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story, and with that show, maybe it’s for the best. HBO also got rid of one of Abrams’ other shows: a science fiction odyssey called Demimonde.
The new Batman show was meant to be a sort of continuation to the classic Batman: The Animated Series, which aired from 1992 to 1995, and memorably featured Mark Hamill as the Joker. That show was co-created by Bruce Timm, who will be an executive producer on the new series.
Here’s the logline: “Utilizing state-of-the-art animation techniques, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.”
The show is also a reunion of sorts for Abrams and Reeves, who worked together on the renowned WB show Felicity.
“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” Abrams and Reeves said in a joint statement when the show was announced. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”
