Plans For MacGruber 2 Are In The Works

If you missed MacGruber back in 2010, you're not alone; the Saturday Night Live skit-turned-feature-length-comedy made less than $10 million worldwide. Despite this, in an interview with Screen Crush, director Jorma Taccone (also of The Lonely Island fame) reveals he and star Will Forte have some ideas to bring the MacGyver spoof back to the big screen.

If you missed MacGruber back in 2010, you’re not alone; the Saturday Night Live skit-turned-feature-length-comedy made less than $10 million worldwide. Despite this, in an interview with Screen Crush, director Jorma Taccone (also of The Lonely Island fame) reveals he and star Will Forte have some ideas to bring the MacGyver spoof back to the big screen.

“It would be me, Will and John [Solomon] writing it again. Every time I hang out with Will, we talk about all our cool ideas for the sequel. We have the idea for it and we have a title, but I won’t tell you what it is.”

Taccone doesn’t reveal much else about the sequel except that the film will take place during Christmas. He also denies that MacGruber and love interest Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig) will have a baby.

MacGruber‘s lack of success in theaters doesn’t seem to be a deterrent. The fact that Taccone, Forte and writer John Solomon seem excited about reuniting and can talk openly about it suggests that they know enough of a fan base exists to make it worth Universal’s while. Certainly the film has gained more favor since its DVD release, and considering it only cost $10 million, the trio won’t likely face budget push-back.

How quickly MacGruber 2 could move forward is anyone’s guess. Taccone recently became attached to direct an adaptation of Image Comics’ The Great Unknown and also has a project in the works with Adam Sandler.

As always though, we’ll keep you posted when we hear more.
