Deadline is reporting that three fantastic actresses, Mélanie Laurent, Sarah Gadon & Isabella Rossellini, have joined the cast of Denis Villeneuve‘s next film, An Enemy. Jake Gyllenhaal has already signed on to play the lead in film and shooting starts next week in London.
The film, which is based on José Saramago’s book The Double, will see Gyllenhaal play “a history teacher living a quiet life with his girlfriend until he discovers a physically identical man living nearby with his pregnant wife. The teacher stalks his double until the couples’ lives become intertwined with lethal consequences.”
Gyllenhaal will be playing the role of both men and I think it’s fair to say that we will most likely see Laurent and Gadon play the girlfriend of the history teacher and the wife of the double, seeing as they both look similar.
From what we know so far, the film looks very promising. Rossellini is acting royalty and Laurent and Gadon are two of my favourite young actresses at the moment. As for Villeneuve, he really made a name for himself back in 2010 when he directed the Oscar nominated film Incendies and since then his profile has risen significantly.
Having An Enemy start production now would make you think that a 2013 release would be in the cards. However, Villeneuve is signed on to direct Hugh Jackman in a film called Prisoners at the start of 2013, with a November 2013 release date in mind. The director is also attached to direct Jessica Chastain in The Darling though a start date hasn’t been set yet.
Villeneuve’s plate is quite full so an exact release date is hard to pinpoint at this time but as always, we will bring you more news on the project as it arises.
