Now that Marvel has The Avengers out the door, their attention is turning towards their next major release, Iron Man 3. Recently, MTV sat down with Tony Stark himself, Robert Downey Jr., and asked him a few questions about his upcoming film. The first point they addressed was the re-casting of the Iron Man character, which is a possibility once RDJ steps away from the role.
“I would really hate for someone else to think they could step into my shoes. I wonder who’s playing Tony Stark next. Is it you? Is that what you’re here to tell me?”
Next, he spoke on how long he plans to keep playing the role of Iron Man/Tony Stark.
“I know things are looking like that they could go on for a long while. As usual in my book, it’s all about quality control and delivering a product that you can have this kind of [positive] reaction to, [like ‘The Avengers’]. If [Marvel] keep[s] doing that, maybe I’ll keep showing up.”
Finally, he spoke on the addition of Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce to the cast.
“[I can’t wait to work with] any or all of them. […] It’s funny. Sometimes you have to call for a good old-fashioned British invasion. ‘Iron Man 3′ is really shaping up to be something special. We start in a couple weeks. I’m sure I’ll be leaking secrets to you as we move ahead.”
Like with any high profile flick, these comments are pretty broad and vague. They don’t really offer much insight into the film or how Downey Jr. feels about it. Sure, he says that it’s shaping up to be something “special” but what else is he going to say? He also mentioned that he’ll keep doing the films as long as Marvel keeps delivering a quality product. Duh, once again a very obvious comment that isn’t terribly insightful.
Despite the fluffy comments, it’s always nice to hear from Mr. Downey and I’m still eagerly anticipating Iron Man 3. I’m very curious to see what director Shane Black has cooked up for us and I’m interested to see how it differs from what Jon Favreau gave us.
