Tomorrow at 5pm Eastern on ESPN2, the winner of the month long Madden NFL 13 Cover Tournament will be revealed. The finalists are, from the Carolina Panthers, quarterback Cam Newton and, from the Detroit Lions, wide out Calvin Johnson. Who will receive your vote?
You still have time to let your voice be heard by going to ESPN.com to vote. At this point in the competition, it’s hard to say if the finalists were pushed through by their fans, or by fans of their rivals, hoping to curse the player with the dreaded Madden Curse.
Madden NFL 12 cover boy Peyton Hillis suffered through an injury-plagued season last year. He saw his rushing TDs go from 11 to 3, and his rushing yards go from 1,177 to 587. Do you believe in curses?
I know for a fact that many Chicago Bears fans are actively voting for their NFC North rival, Calvin Johnson, to win. Conversely, I’m sure there are some Atlanta Falcons fans stuffing the ballot box to put their NFL South rival on the cover.
I’m sure it’s an honor to be selected to be on the cover for the players, but whether you believe in curses or not, you have to see the pattern of play from all those that graced the cover. Even Hillis himself recognized the trend after his sub-par year.
“Things didn’t work in my favor this year,” Hillis said. “There’s a few things that happened this year that made me believe in curses. Ain’t no doubt about it.”
