Upon first hearing about the movie Hitchcock, based on the book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho by Stephen Rebello, I was unsure about Anthony Hopkins portraying the man himself. This is not because Mr. Hopkins does not have the chops to do so – he does – but because I could not imagine him as the famed director. After all, there is the iconic profile most generations have come to know over the years. How could they pull such a thing off?
Luckily, my suspense and anticipation has been calmed this week as the first image of Hopkins as Hitchcock has blown away my expectations.
After seeing Hopkins as Hitchcock, I cannot wait to start seeing photographs from the rest of the cast. Scartlett Johnansson seems like the perfect choice for Janet Leigh and the same thing can be said about Jessica Biel as Vera Miles and Helen Mirren as Alma Reville. What excites me even more about the upcoming film is the fact the screenplay is being penned by not only John J. McLaughlin (Black Swan), but also by the author of the book that it’s based on.
Finally, for those who might have forgotten, the film’s story surrounds the time period where Hitchcock was at the top of his career. During this time, he went back to his suspense roots, despite the studios dubbing this a horrible idea, and created one of the most renowned horror classics to date, Psycho. The film also focuses on the love story between both he and his wife, Alma.
Something tells me this is going to be one of the few movies worth the wait, especially if you’re a fan of cinema and one of the greatest directors of all time.
